Happy Dragon Boat Festival!
Happy Dragon Boat Festival!娟儿 This is a Zongzi I made this morning. Zongzi is also called stuffed rice dumplings. It is a special traditional food Chinese people have on the 5th of May (lunar calender). We stuff different fillings in glutinous rice and wrap them in reed leaves. And then boil or steam them. I used red beans and Chinese jujube. They are sweet. People in Southern China prefer to use sausage and meat as fillings. This kind of cristle Zongzi is available in Starbucks. This holiday is to commemorate Qu Yuan (340 BC-278 BC), a patriotic poet who drowned himself in a river because the King did not accept his suggestions of governing the country. The people were afraid that Qu's body be eaten by fish, so they fed the fish with stuffed rice dumplings. Hence the present Zongzi. Later, people race dragon boats to celebrate the day. Starting from 2008, this day has become a National Holiday. And we can enjoy a long weekend.
