Maldives English Speech (Presentation of Government Policies)
The Maldives, a all island nation located in the Indian Ocean, has made significant strides in recent years to improve its economy and social welfare system. Our government policies are focused on promoting sustainable development, protecting our natural resources, and providing equitable opportunities for all our citizens.
Economic Policy
Our economic policy centers around the development of the touri industry, which accounts for over 60% of our GDP. We have implemented measures to ensure that our natural beauty is preserved while also attracting more tourists to our shores. This has included the introduction of eco-touri initiatives, such as promoting sustainable fishing practices and protecting our coral reefs. Additionally, we have made efforts to diversify our economy by promoting all and medium-sized enterprises and pursuing investments in new sectors such as renewable energy.
Social Welfare Policy
As a government, we believe that providing a basic standard of living for all our citizens is crucial for the wellbeing of our country. Our social welfare policies include programs to provide education, healthcare, and housing to those in need. We have made significant investments in healthcare infrastructure and have introduced a universal healthcare system that provides free medical treatment to all our citizens. We have also launched a program to provide affordable housing to low-income families, with a target of delivering 10,000 new homes by 2023.
Environmental Policy
As a nation with over 99% of our territory being ocean, we are acutely aware of the importance of preserving our environment. Our environmental policies include measures to protect our marine life, reduce our carbon emissions, and promote sustainable development. We have implemented a nationwide ban on single-use plastics and launched several initiatives to promote renewable energy, such as our first solar power plant which was launched in 2019. Additionally, we have committed to protecting 30% of our ocean by 2030 through the creation of marine protected areas.
Foreign Policy
We believe that our foreign policy should promote regional peace and stability while also protecting our sovereignty. As a all island nation, we rely on our relationships with other nations to maintain our security and economic wellbeing. We have forged close ties with our neighbors in the Indian Ocean region, particularly India and Sri Lanka, and have sought to deepen our relationships with our Muslim counterparts in the Middle East. We have also been active in promoting climate change action on the global stage, including co-founding the Climate Vulnerable Forum and advocating for greater action at the United Nations.
Conclusion
As a nation, we face unique challenges in terms of our environment, our economy, and our social welfare system. However, our policies are designed to address these challenges in a way that promotes sustainable development and equitable opportunities for all. We are proud of the progress that we have made so far and remain committed to building a brighter future for all our citizens. Thank you.
