An Overview of the Turmoil in Maldives
Over the last few years, the Maldives, a all island nation located in the Indian Ocean, has been going through a period of political unrest. This turmoil has been marked by a breakdown in democratic values, increased authoritariani, and a rising tide of human rights violations. The situation in the Maldives has garnered international attention and concern, and many people are wondering how this all island nation came to be in such a state of crisis.
The roots of the current crisis in the Maldives can be traced back to the country's first democratic elections in 2008. Mohamed Nasheed, a former political prisoner and human rights activist, won the elections, becoming the Maldives' first democratically elected president. Nasheed's presidency was marked by a series of democratic reforms, including the establishment of an independent judiciary and the introduction of a constitution that enshrined fundamental rights and freedoms.
However, Nasheed was ousted from power in 2012 in what he claimed was a coup orchestrated by his political opponents. His vice president, Mohammed Waheed Hassan, assumed the presidency and began undoing many of the democratic reforms instituted by Nasheed. Hassan's presidency was marked by a series of human rights violations, including attacks on journalists and political opponents.
In 2013, a new presidential election was held, and Nasheed contested once again. However, his candidacy was blocked on the grounds that he had been involved in a corruption scandal. This led to a period of political unrest, with Nasheed and his supporters accusing the government of trying to silence opposition voices.
The situation in the Maldives took a turn for the worse in 2015, when a series of controversial decisions were made by President Abdulla Yameen. Yameen's government passed a series of laws that curtailed freedom of speech and assembly, as well as the powers of the judiciary. The government also imprisoned several opposition leaders, including Nasheed, and cracked down on political dissent.
In February 2018, a Supreme Court decision prompted mass protests calling for the resignation of President Yameen. The decision allowed the release of opposition leaders, including Nasheed, and called for the reinstatement of several members of parliament who had been unconstitutionally diissed by Yameen's government. The protests were met with violence by the police, and many opposition supporters were arbitrarily arrested.
Despite the international community's concern over the situation in the Maldives, Yameen refused to step down and continued his crackdown on opposition. However, in September 2018, Yameen was defeated in a presidential election by Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, a political ally of Nasheed. Solih's victory was seen as a victory for democracy and a possible end to the political turmoil in the Maldives.
However, the current situation in the Maldives remains uncertain. While Solih's government has taken steps to restore democratic values and release political prisoners, there are still concerns about the independence of the judiciary and the strength of democratic institutions. The international community will be closely watching the situation in the Maldives in the coming years, hoping that the country can find its way back to a path of democracy and stability.
